Upper Bann MP Demands Action to Stop EU Immigration Overreach in Northern Ireland

Carla Lockhart MP • May 21, 2024

Carla Lockhart, MP for Upper Bann, has raised urgent concerns about the extent of EU overreach in illegal immigration in Northern Ireland. The DUP MP called on the Government to provide transparency and take decisive action after the High Court in Belfast ruled that the Illegal Immigration Act could not be applied to Northern Ireland.

The Member of Parliament for Upper Bann, during her contribution to the debate stated:

"What else are the Government not telling us about where the EU has overreach into Northern Ireland, and where people in Northern Ireland are once again in limbo between two regulatory entities? Will the Secretary of State and the Government do the right thing and stop stringing the people of Northern Ireland along by simply appealing the decision, and will the Secretary of State commit to legislate to get rid of the EU supremacy on human rights contained in Article 2 of the Windsor Framework?"

Carla Lockhart’s comments highlight the need for the UK Government to address the regulatory confusion brought by the High Court ruling in Belfast and to ensure that Northern Ireland, as an integral part of the United Kingdom applies measures to stop illegal immigration here as it would in any other part of our country. The MP is calling for immediate legislative action to remove the European Union’s influence on human rights issues within Northern Ireland.

"People here deserve clear and decisive leadership from the Home Secretary which puts the interests of the people of our United Kingdom and more specifically Northern Ireland first ," Carla Lockhart MP added. "The Government must act now to reclaim full sovereignty and provide stability in the midst of increased illegal immigration to the United Kingdom."
