Tragic Murder in Banbridge Underscores the Need for Action on Violence Against Women
Carla Lockhart MP for Upper Bann has said the community of Banbridge has been left shocked and heartbroken following the tragic death of Karen Cummings, who was found murdered earlier this week. Police investigations are ongoing, and it is vital that the PSNI are given the space and time they need to carry out their work and ensure justice is served.

Responding to the devastating news, Ms Lockhart, expressed her condolences and emphasised the need not to speculate while the investigation takes its course:
"My thoughts and prayers are with Karen’s family and friends as they try to come to terms with this unimaginable loss. The entire community of Banbridge has been shaken to its core by this tragedy, and I urge anyone with information to come forward to support the police investigation. It is important now that justice is sought and those responsible are held to account.”
Ms. Lockhart also reflected on the wider issue of violence against women and girls, stressing that such incidents highlight an urgent need for a coordinated response.
“As we approach the end of this year, we must confront the stark reality that Karen’s death is one of far too many tragedies involving women in Northern Ireland. This year alone, seven women have lost their lives to violence, and this cannot continue to go unaddressed. Violence against women and girls is not just a women’s issue—it is a societal issue that demands action."
She added that this week also marks the second anniversary of Natalie McNally’s murder, another heart-breaking case that remains deeply etched in the memory of the local community.
Natalie’s and now Karen’s murder locally serves as a lasting reminder of the need to do more to protect women. We need to address both the root causes and consequences of violence against women, tackling low conviction rates, tougher sentencing, and ensuring that women feel safe in their homes, communities, and workplaces.
Ms. Lockhart has been a strong advocate for a joined-up approach to tackling violence against women and girls. She has raised the issue in Parliament and welcomed a commitment from government ministers to work closely with devolved institutions in Northern Ireland.
"I have been clear in Westminster that we need a UK-wide strategy to address violence against women, ensuring Northern Ireland is not left behind. The Minister has signalled an intention to come to Northern Ireland early in the New Year, and I will continue to push for real action and progress on this critical issue.”
The Upper Bann MP concluded with a call for vigilance as the Christmas period approaches:
"The festive season is often marked by increased reports of domestic violence and coercive control. I urge everyone to be aware of the warning signs and to support those affected. Charities such as Women’s Aid and Victim Support NI do vital work to protect victims, and they need our continued support.
As the community of Banbridge mourns the loss of Karen Cummings, I would reiterate my commitment to ensuring the voices of victims are heard and that Northern Ireland moves forward with a collective resolve to combat violence against women.
Anyone with information related to this case is urged to contact the PSNI on 101, or anonymously through Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.”
