Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart welcomes income threshold increase for Free School Meals and Uniform Grants

Carla Lockhart MP • July 9, 2025

Upper Bann MP, Carla Lockhart, has welcomed a key change that will see more families become eligible for Free School Meals and Uniform Grants from the 2025/2026 academic year.

The Department of Education has confirmed that the income threshold for families in receipt of Universal Credit will rise from £15,000 to £15,390, helping more households access vital financial support amid continued cost-of-living pressures.

Speaking following the announcement, Carla Lockhart said:

“This is a very welcome move that will make a real difference to families right across Northern Ireland, including many here in Upper Bann.

As the cost of living continues to put pressure on household budgets, this increase – aligned with inflation – ensures that support is reaching those who need it most. Free school meals and uniform grants are essential lifelines for thousands of families, ensuring children can learn and thrive with dignity and without added financial strain.

I want to commend my DUP colleague, the Minister for Education, for delivering this practical and compassionate change. It is a clear example of how policy decisions, informed by public consultation, can deliver tangible benefits to families.”

Carla Lockhart also encouraged all eligible families to review the updated criteria and submit applications promptly:

“I strongly urge families across Upper Bann and beyond to check their eligibility and apply as soon as possible to ensure this support is in place for the new school year.”
