MP continues to seek funding for province’s agricultural shows

As the 2026 show season approaches, Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart MP is continuing to press the DAERA Minister to deliver a dedicated support package for Northern Ireland’s agricultural shows.

“Our local agricultural shows remain a cornerstone of rural life and a vital shop window for our agri-food sector. Events such as Lurgan Show in my constituency, not only provide an enjoyable and educational day out for farming families and the wider public, but also offer a unique opportunity to showcase the very best of local produce, livestock, and farming innovation.

“Agricultural Shows help bridge the gap between farm and fork, giving consumers a clearer understanding of how their food is produced and the care that goes into maintaining high standards of animal welfare.”

The MP highlighted that the previous Minister Edwin Poots had recognised the value of such events through a dedicated support scheme for agricultural shows. In contrast, she expressed concern that no comparable provision has yet been confirmed for the upcoming season.

Ms Lockhart added: “Minister Muir has attended a number of shows during his tenure, and whilst he has acknowledged the importance of such events, he stopped short of committing to direct financial backing.

“At a time when our farming community is under unprecedented pressure from weather, bureaucracy and rising input costs, including fuel and fertiliser, it is essential that local government steps up to support the very events that sustain and promote rural life.”

She continued: “Agricultural shows are not just social occasions; they are economic drivers and educational platforms. They celebrate the resilience and innovation of our farming families, while strengthening connections with the public. Without adequate support, many of these shows face an uncertain future.”

Carla Lockhart said: “For many, the local show is an annual fixture on the calendar. Once again, I have written to the DAERA Minister urging him to bring forward a targeted funding package. We must do everything possible to sustain the future of our rural agricultural shows.
