Lockhart challenges Government over illegal immigration and Northern Ireland’s exposed border
Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has challenged the Government over what she described as its failure to protect Northern Ireland from illegal immigration, warning that the Province remains exposed because of weaknesses in UK border policy.

Speaking during Northern Ireland Questions in the House of Commons, Mrs Lockhart condemned the recent criminal disorder but said there could be no justification for a border policy that leaves Northern Ireland vulnerable to illegal immigration.
Responding to her question, the Secretary of State focused on the Common Travel Area and ruled out immigration controls on the land border, highlighting increased immigration enforcement activity across the United Kingdom.
Mrs Lockhart said:
“There can never be any excuse for criminal disorder, but there is equally no excuse for a border policy that leaves Northern Ireland exposed. How many more incidents will it take before the Government deals with the open border with the Republic of Ireland, which is being exploited daily? When will they put in place measures to protect our citizens from illegal immigrants?"
Unfortunately, the Secretary of State’s response completely missed the point I was making. My question was not about the Common Travel Area. I fully recognise the importance of arrangements that allow British and Irish citizens to travel freely. My question was specifically about illegal immigrants exploiting the open border into Northern Ireland and what practical measures the Government intends to take to stop that.
The Government cannot continue to ignore the legitimate concerns being raised by people across Northern Ireland. Communities want to know that our borders are secure, that illegal immigration is being tackled effectively and that those who enter the United Kingdom illegally cannot simply make their way into Northern Ireland without consequence.
People expect secure borders, effective immigration enforcement and policies that protect our communities. The Government must stop sidestepping these concerns and start taking meaningful action.”
