MP concerned as farmers targeted by online fraud
The DUP’s Westminster Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs spokesperson Carla Lockhart MP has expressed her concerns following reports of fraudulent online scam stargeting farmers and rural businesses

“Farmers across the province are already under financial strain due to weather conditions, fluctuating commodity prices and soaring production costs. It is alarming to read in the farming press that farmers are now falling victim to fraudsters who are luring them in using fake websites and social media posts.“
Rural crime is already an escalating problem for farmers and those living in rural areas. Farmers are conscious of protecting their property against opportune thieves and organised crime gangs, and now their livelihoods are facing additional threats from online scammers.
”According to a recent statement from Bank of Ireland, financial crime is a persistent and growing problem for society. The bank’s Agri-Business Manager Richard Primrose is warning farmers and rural businesses to be aware of the risks, especially when buying large items such as tractors and farm equipment online.
Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart is urging farmers to be careful. “Farm incomes are stretched and farmers need to safeguard their enterprises against fraud. Scammers and fraudsters and continually preying on individuals and vulnerable members of our community. Now farmers are being targeted using fake profiles and adverts on social media and bogus websites.
“In many cases these sophisticated websites replicate those of reputable machinery, tractor and equipment dealers and suppliers. Victims are often attracted by reduced price tags and pay directly via bank transfer.
“I am urging farmers to be extra careful, and where possible deal in person with known retailers using safe payment methods, especially when making larger acquisitions. Never give your bank details to anyone over the telephone. Stop, Think and Check!
