Lockhart Raises Alarm Over Disturbing Online Content Reaching Children Through Digital Games
Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has raised serious concerns in the House of Commons regarding the growing number of reports from parents about children being exposed to disturbing and inappropriate content while using digital games and online platforms.

Mrs Lockhart said she has been increasingly contacted by concerned parents who are alarmed by explicit and unsuitable advertisements appearing during games and online activity aimed at children.
Raising the matter directly with the Secretary of State, Mrs Lockhart warned of the lasting impact such content can have on young minds.
Speaking in Parliament, she said:
“When a child views an inappropriate image online, they cannot unsee it. I have been horrified recently by the number of parents coming to me about inappropriate ads popping up on kids’ digital games. Some of the images are horrendous and children are viewing them at a very early age.”
Mrs Lockhart called for urgent engagement on the issue and asked for a meeting with the Secretary of State to discuss what further action can be taken.
In response, the Secretary of State acknowledged the seriousness of the issue and agreed to meet, stating:
“She is right to say that once you have seen something, you cannot unsee it. That is especially true for young minds.”
Mrs Lockhart welcomed that commitment but said parents deserve stronger protections and more urgent action.
Speaking afterwards, she said:
“This is not simply about screen time or parental controls. Parents are contacting me because deeply troubling content is appearing where children should reasonably be safe. Once a child is exposed to something frightening, explicit or deeply inappropriate, that impact can remain with them.
Parents are doing their very best to protect their children, but technology companies, regulators and Government also have responsibilities. We cannot allow children to be exposed to harmful material and simply accept it as part of modern life.
I welcome the Secretary of State agreeing to meet on this issue and I intend to continue pressing for stronger protections, greater accountability and action that genuinely puts children’s safety first.”
Mrs Lockhart said she would continue engaging with parents and raising concerns directly with Government and regulators.
