Lockhart Highlights Work of Guide Dogs NI Following Constituency Interest

Carla Lockhart MP • April 22, 2026

Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has highlighted the vital work of Guide Dogs Northern Ireland after renewed interest from constituents who noticed a guide dog in the House of Commons chamber.

Mrs Lockhart, who is in Parliament weekly, said she wanted to use the opportunity this week to showcase the role guide dogs play after a number of constituents got in touch with questions.

Speaking on the issue, she said:

“I am in Parliament every week and regularly see Jennie, a golden retriever guide dog who supports Steve Darling MP. However, this week I wanted to take the opportunity to highlight the incredible work of guide dogs after a number of constituents contacted me having noticed a dog in the Chamber.

It is a great example of how Parliament is adapting to support those with disabilities, but more importantly it highlights the life-changing role guide dogs play in everyday life.”

Mrs Lockhart praised the work of Guide Dogs Northern Ireland and the impact they have across communities.

“Guide Dogs NI does outstanding work, helping those who are visually impaired to live with greater independence, confidence and freedom. These dogs are not simply companions, they are highly trained partners who enable people to navigate the world safely and with dignity.

Across Upper Bann and throughout Northern Ireland, many people rely on this support, and it is vital that the work of Guide Dogs NI continues to be recognised and supported.”

She also emphasised the importance of improving accessibility.

“We must continue to do more to improve accessibility for those living with sight loss. That means supporting organisations like Guide Dogs NI, but also ensuring our public spaces and services are inclusive for all.

The level of interest from constituents shows just how important awareness is, and I am pleased to use this opportunity to shine a light on such a valuable service.”

“I would encourage anyone who can to support Guide Dogs Northern Ireland, whether through volunteering, fundraising or raising awareness. Their work transforms lives every single day.”
