Increased provision of accessible toilets

Carla Lockhart MP • December 20, 2023

Speaking in a debate in the House of Commons in relation to Crohn’s and Colitis, DUP MP Carla Lockhart has called for the Government to invest more in the provision of accessible toilets across the United Kingdom.

The Upper Bann MP said:

“Access to adequate toilet facilities is something that should not be a luxury for anyone, especially not for those facing the daily challenges of Colitis or Crohn's disease. The lack of accessible toilets across the U.K. poses a significant barrier, causing distress and anxiety for those managing these conditions.

The unpredictability of flare-ups makes it crucial to have timely access to toilet facilities, and the absence of them can lead to sufferers withdrawing from public places through fear.

The Government must prioritise the provision of accessible toilets nationwide, ensuring they meet the specific needs of individuals with Colitis or Crohn's disease. This includes not only increasing the number of these facilities but also ensuring their accessibility across a range of public places.

By investing in the provision of accessible toilets, the Government can significantly enhance the quality of life for thousands of people managing Colitis or Crohn's disease. I am proud of what we have achieved in this regard locally across Upper Bann, but we can do more both here but also nationally. I trust the Government will act.”
