Fighting cancer is tough physically, mentally and financially

Carla Lockhart MP • February 27, 2024

Upper Bann MP, Carla Lockhart is continuing to press the Government for better financial support for children and young people on diagnosis of cancer.

Speaking following engagement with the All Party Parliamentary Group on Children, Teenagers and Young Adults with Cancer Carla said,  “This week in Parliament I have been continuing my work to try and help bring about more financial support for children, young people and their families following that dreaded cancer diagnosis.

Having commenced this campaign alongside David and Sara Watson (B Positive) we are continuing on our mission to ensure Child’s DLA is paid immediately on diagnosis as opposed to 3 months later.

A child’s needs start immediately and for young people like Amy in the picture who I met last week on diagnosis couldn’t work yet got little to no support through our benefits system because she was self employed.  This needs to change.  With increased diagnosis of Cancer the Government need to step up and support those in need.  I will continue alongside David and Sara to press for the change that is needed.”
