Baby lose certificates should be available in Northern Ireland

Carla Lockhart MP • February 27, 2024

Upper Bann MP, Carla Lockhart has called on the Health Minister, Robin Swann to make available to parents a baby loss certificate similar to that which has been agreed to in England.

Speaking on the issue Carla said, “A number of constituents have been in touch about Northern Ireland implementing a similar initiative to that of England in which parents who have lost a baby before 24 weeks of pregnancy can now apply for an official baby loss certificate.

In England it is a voluntary service aimed at helping support grieving parents and acknowledge their pain”.

She goes on,  “A life lost should always be recognised and never forgotten. I have issued correspondence to the Health Minister lobbying for this to be replicated in Northern Ireland.  The Minister has clarified the current situation which outlines that “𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩 𝘋𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘧𝘶𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘸𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘣𝘢𝘣𝘺 𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘴.  𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘱𝘳𝘦-24-𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘬 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘺 𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘴 𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘺 𝘓𝘰𝘴𝘴 𝘙𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘎𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘌𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥.  𝘋𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘚𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘌𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮 𝘪𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦, 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢 𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸 𝘵𝘰 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘰𝘸, 𝘪𝘵 𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘢 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘮𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘕𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘯 𝘐𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥”.  I will continue to press for this roll out in the very near future.”
