Enhanced Flood Support For Businesses

MF001801 • March 5, 2024

Upper Bann MP has welcomed further support for businesses impacted by the flooding of 2023.  Flooding which lasted almost a week in places in October / November 2023 destroyed homes and businesses throughout Portadown, Gilford and Banbridge.

The Enhanced Flood Support Scheme will provide further support to businesses that were directly flooded following the severe weather in late October and early November. The support is in addition to the £7,500 grants and rates relief that has been provided to date to affected businesses.

The purpose of the Enhanced Flood Support Scheme grant is to provide up to £100,000 additional support to eligible businesses to help them re-open and resume trading, or remain open and continue trading. Applicants will have two options to choose from during the process dependant on the level of eligible costs incurred, or to be incurred.

Speaking following the announcement of further support Carla Lockhart said, “this is a welcome intervention and something we have lobbied for since the flooding occurred.  I was pleased following representation to the Secretary of State back in November that money was allocated to support businesses impacted.  An initial amount of £7,500 was made available and this is a follow on for businesses further impacted.  I welcome its announcement, would encourage businesses to check their eligibility via the Council website and apply if they meet the criteria.  In these days where the cost of living is high and cash flows are tight it is vital that Government provides support and help where it is needed.

The closing date for the “Enhanced Support Scheme” is 22nd March at 12 noon.  If you need assistance please feel free to get in touch with me or you can contact the Council direct who are administering the scheme and the money.

Whilst this money is welcome there is a bigger problem in that Portadown and the wider area is still susceptible to flooding and needs major investment in flood defence mechanisms.  There is a scheme which is ready for roll out.  I therefore would continue to call on the Minister for Infrastructure to make every effort to deliver this project.  Make money available and ensure properties and businesses are properly protected going forward.”
