Carla Lockhart MP Urges Government to Act on WASPI Women’s State Pension Injustice

Carla Lockhart MP • November 26, 2024

Carla Lockhart, Member of Parliament for Upper Bann, has reiterated her strong support for the Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) campaign and is calling on the Government to urgently address the injustice faced by millions of women born in the 1950s who were unfairly impacted by changes to the state pension age.

The WASPI campaign highlights the lack of adequate notice provided to women about the acceleration of the state pension age increase from 60 to 66. Many affected women were left with insufficient time to prepare for this significant change, causing financial hardship and emotional stress.

Speaking on the issue, Carla Lockhart MP said:

“I fully support the WASPI campaign and the fight for justice for the women who have been so badly let down by successive governments. Women born in the 1950s contributed to our society and economy for decades, often while balancing careers and family responsibilities, yet they have been left to bear the brunt of a poorly communicated and deeply unfair policy change.

“In Northern Ireland and across Upper Bann, many women have come to me sharing their personal stories of financial and emotional hardship. They worked hard, paid their taxes, and planned their retirements based on information they trusted, only to find the goalposts had been moved without warning. This is not acceptable, and it’s time for the Government to do the right thing and provide fair compensation for these women.

I have been a consistent advocate for WASPI women in Westminster and am continuing to urge the Government to listen to the calls for fairness.“

She added: “The Government must act now to resolve this issue. These women deserve more than words; they deserve justice. I will continue to stand with the WASPI campaign and raise this issue at every opportunity in Parliament until we see action.

“This injustice is about fairness and respect for a generation of women who gave so much to our society. It is time to right this wrong. I would encourage constituents to support the ongoing petition calling for justice for WASPI women by signing the petition below;

Carla Lockhart MP concluded:

“I would urge everyone in Upper Bann and beyond to sign this petition and show your support for these women. Together, we can send a clear message to the Government that enough is enough—justice for WASPI women must not be delayed any longer.”
