Carla Lockhart MP alongside David and Sara Watson Advocates for Immediate Financial Support for Families Affected by Childhood Cancer

As part of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Carla Lockhart MP for Upper Bann recently hosted a meeting with Minister Gordon Lyons MLA, alongside David and Sara Watson, mum and dad of much loved and sadly missed Adam Watson the founder of the famous B Positive charity. The meeting was organised to address a pressing issue facing families affected by childhood cancer: the significant delay in financial support from the government.

Currently, parents whose children are diagnosed with cancer must wait three months before they can apply for financial assistance through the Child’s Disability Living Allowance (DLA). For families already walking the hardest of roads, this delay can cause enormous stress, particularly for those who are self-employed or on zero-hour contracts and find themselves suddenly without an income.  A child’s needs commence immediately on diagnosis of cancer not three months after, therefore so should childhood DLA.

Carla Lockhart MP, who facilitated the meeting, stressed the importance of addressing this issue with urgency:

"David and Sara are working tirelessly to make a difference for families affected by childhood cancer, particularly those facing financial struggles. Today, we took an important step forward, meeting with Minister Lyons to highlight the urgent need for financial support to begin immediately upon diagnosis.  We see this as “Adam’s Amendment”, named after Adam, the star of the County Down who will sadly be forever 9. The amendment calls for financial assistance to be made available to families immediately upon a child’s cancer diagnosis, ensuring that no parent is forced to wait months for the help they need. I thank the Minister for his empathy and his commitment to seriously considering reforms to the current system.”

She also acknowledged David and Sara’s incredible strength and dedication to creating real change for other families, saying:

"I see myself as just a cog in the wheel, helping to push forward the change that David and Sara are fighting for. Their faith and their desire to ensure Adam’s legacy lives on keep them going, and together, we will push for real change for the families who need it most."

Sara, reflecting on the meeting and their journey, noted:

"When a child gets a diagnosis, it all happens very quickly, and it takes two parents to be at their bedside every single day. Sadly, this cannot happen for many families due to financial pressures. Along with Carla, we will continue to tell people of the struggles these families are faced with, and maybe, just maybe, someday, someone will listen."

The meeting represents a significant step in the fight to ensure that families affected by childhood cancer receive the financial support they need as soon as possible. With Adam’s memory guiding their mission, David and Sara remain determined to advocate for change, supported by Carla Lockhart and others who share their commitment to easing the burden on these brave families.

Carla vowed to continue her efforts, saying:

"Adam in his short life, has inspired so many. I will continue to support David and Sara in every way I can, and keep them in my prayers as they face each day with remarkable grace and courage."
