Carla Lockhart MP Welcomes UK Supreme Court Ruling Affirming Legal Definition of a Woman calling it “A Victory for Common Sense and Biological Reality”

Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has welcomed today’s UK Supreme Court judgment, which confirms that the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex.

The ruling, brought forward by women’s rights group For Women Scotland, ends years of confusion around sex-based protections and affirms that being a woman is a matter of biology, not identity or paperwork.

Carla Lockhart MP said:

“This is a clear and welcome ruling, a victory for common sense, biological reality and the rights of women and girls. It should never have taken a Supreme Court case to define what a woman is.”

“Across the UK, and here in Northern Ireland, we’ve seen politicians and parties tying themselves in knots over this basic truth. The Alliance Party, for example, have spent months dithering, ducking and dodging the question, unwilling or unable to give a straight answer to what is, quite frankly, a straightforward question.”

“How can anyone claim to stand for women’s rights if they can’t even define what a woman is?”

“This ruling restores clarity in law and reaffirms the importance of sex-based protections. Protections that are essential in healthcare, education, sport, and safeguarding. It’s time for everyone in public life to get back to reality and stand up for women based on biological fact, not ideology.”

“I commend the women who brought this case forward and refused to be silenced. Today is a good day for women, for the law, and for truth.”
