A Day of Community Engagement in Upper Bann

Carla Lockhart MP • October 2, 2024

Carla Lockhart MP spent a busy day attending a series of community events in Upper Bann, supporting local initiatives and charities.

The day started at the Star of David Accordion Band’s Big Breakfast, which saw a strong turnout from the local community. The event marked the recent unveiling of a new banneret in memory of Arlene and David McKeown, two amazing people from Rectory who were synonymous with the Band over many years. Reflecting on the event, Carla commented, “The Star of David Accordion Band has always been a key part of our cultural fabric in Portwdown, and the big breakfast event demonstrated just how deeply rooted it is within the community with such a big turnout. The new banneret is a wonderful tribute to Arlene and David two of the most loyal people I have had the privilege of knowing, and I want to commend Giles their son and the whole team for the continued work they do. The band not only promotes our local cultural but also provides a real sense of togetherness for its members and supporters.”

Carla then made her way to The Old School Coffee Room at Fergus Hall, St. Mark’s, Portadown, for a Macmillan Coffee Morning. The event, organised by Vanessa Coulter, was held in memory of her mother and raised money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Carla said, “It was a privilege to attend this very special coffee morning and support Vanessa in her efforts to raise funds for Macmillan. After the loss of her mother, it’s touching to see her doing good for others who might find themselves in the same situation. The community has really rallied around her, and it’s a great example of the support we can offer each other during difficult times.”

The final stop of the day was at Cove & Co Coffee & Gift Shop in Banbridge, which hosted another Macmillan Cancer Support fundraiser. The cafe, connected to Grace Generation Church, operates out of a former nightclub, The Coach that has been transformed into a growing Christian witness. Carla added, “It’s amazing to see how the old nightclub has been completely transformed into a thriving church and coffee shop. Cove & Co is a perfect example of practical Christianity at its best – giving back to the community, providing a welcoming space, and supporting vital causes like Macmillan. The ladies involved did a fantastic job with today’s event, and I’m so impressed by the energy and commitment shown.”
