Support vital for families with child cancer diagnosis

Carla Lockhart MP • May 2, 2023

Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart was joined by David and Sara Watson on B Positive at a meeting with senior officials from the Department for Communities, to discuss support for families were a child has received a diagnosis of cancer.

Speaking after the meeting, Carla Lockhart said:

“As we all know, David and Sara have sadly walked the path of receiving the devastating news of a diagnosis of cancer for their child. Little Adam was such a wee trooper in his fight against cancer, but sadly lost that fight.

Inspired by his fight against this terrible illness, B Positive, set up by Adam and now led by his incredible parents David and Sara Watson, are now championing the cause of families who face this situation and trying to advance their needs with Government.

We are imploring the Government to provide financial assistance to families upon receipt of a diagnosis. With the impact of the illness being so devastating on the child, the commitments of appointments and dealing with the symptoms of the illness, it makes it almost impossible to work whilst also tending to a sick child. We need this to be recognised by the Government and support provided so that amidst all the worry, financial worries do not add to the pressures upon the family.

This was a positive meeting with the Department for Communities and I will also be working with David and Sarah when they visit London in the next few weeks to engage with the Government. To secure such support would be a fitting legacy for the Watson family and little Adam. I will certainly do what I can to progress this cause.”
