Northern Ireland Volleyball Triumphs at St Patrick’s Challenge Trophy

Carla Lockhart MP • March 19, 2025

Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has praised Northern Ireland Volleyball following their resounding success in retaining the St Patrick’s Challenge Trophy on 15 March. The annual fixture, which sees Northern Ireland take on the Republic of Ireland, saw Northern Ireland’s four national teams secure a 3-1 victory over their counterparts in an exciting day of top-class sport.

Speaking after attending the event at South Lakes Leisure Centre, Carla Lockhart said:

“I was delighted to be there in person to cheer on Northern Ireland and witness such a high standard of competition. Volleyball is a fast-paced, skillful, and hugely engaging sport, and it was fantastic to see it showcased here in Upper Bann. Many of the Northern Ireland athletes hail from this area and are fantastic role models for young people taking up the sport.”

She also commended the Northern Ireland Volleyball Federation, a volunteer-led organisation working tirelessly to grow the sport, support talented players, and develop teams to compete at an international level.

“This success is a testament to the hard work of everyone involved—players, coaches, and the volunteers who make it all happen. Volleyball is the second most popular team ball sport in the world, and with the right support, I have no doubt it will continue to grow here in Northern Ireland. It was also wonderful to see so many young people, families, and supporters enjoying the matches.”

The event, hosted at South Lakes Leisure Centre, was sold out, demonstrating the increasing interest in the sport locally. Carla Lockhart also praised Armagh City, Banbridge, and Craigavon Borough Council for their role in supporting the event and encouraged them to continue backing volleyball in the area.

Looking ahead, there are already plans in place for a major 5-Nation Volleyball Championship in June 2026 at the venue, which promises to bring even more high-level competition to the region.

Carla Lockhart concluded:

“Congratulations to Northern Ireland Volleyball on their brilliant achievement. I also call on Sport NI to continue and expand their support for volleyball so we can see this fantastic sport flourish even further. Well done to all involved, and best of luck to Northern Ireland Volleyball in future competitions!”
