Lockhart highlights needs of local veterans in Parliament

DUP MP Carla Lockhart has called on the Government to address the specific needs of veterans in Northern Ireland, during a sitting of the House of Commons last week.

Commenting after the debate, the Upper Bann representative said:

“New research from Queen’s University Belfast has found that Northern Ireland veterans who are exposed to increased traumatic events and experience increased barriers to care preventing them from seeking help, are at increased risk of symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) distress.

It is vital that these needs are met. In the House of Commons, I raised this with the Minister, Jonny Mercer MP, seeking assurances that the needs of veterans who served in Northern Ireland will be supported, particularly given the findings of this research.

We have a strong network of veterans support in Northern Ireland, but it is vital that Government continue to support this. We cannot see any veteran left alone, left behind, or left to suffer. I will continue to champion veterans needs in Parliament and ensure those who served here are supported.”
