“Congratulations to Lurgan and District Horse and Cattle Show Society on a another hugely successful event. A lot of voluntary work goes on behind the scenes to organise a show on this scale, and the committee really pulled out all the stops this year.
“Records confirm that the first-ever Lurgan Show dates back to 1846. The current society re-established the event in 1912, and the fact that it is still going strong after more than a century, is testimony to the hard work and dedication of its organisers who work tirelessly on an annual basis.”
The one-day show held in the picturesque Lurgan Park was blessed with glorious sunshine and record crowds.
Ms Lockhart added:”The park’s beautiful surroundings provide an idyllic backdrop for the event which showcases the very best that the local agri-food sector has to offer. I enjoyed meeting visitors and local constituents, and it was also lovely to see livestock breeders and equine exhibitors from throughout Northern Ireland supporting the show and competing for a share of the prize fund.
“The itinerary offers something for all ages and provides a real family-orientated and enjoyable day out in the centre of Lurgan. The country comes to town and the local community really enjoy a glimpse of farm life and local artisan produce.
“It’s fantastic to see children and adults enjoying themselves and taking an interest in the array of prize-winning animals and poultry, vintage tractors, trade stalls and the various home industry and primary school crafts.”
An enjoyable day out for all members of the family, Lurgan Show receives support from the local community and attracts sponsors, visitors and exhibitors from across Northern Ireland and further afield.”
The DUP’s Agriculture spokesperson continued: “I’d like to thank headline sponsor Translink of whom I was able to help secure funding from, Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, and all of the sponsors for supporting Lurgan Show.
“In recent years show organisers across Northern Ireland have found it difficult to operate, mainly due to soaring overhead costs. More financial aid must be made available by Government departments to secure the long-term future our of provincial agricultural shows.
“I am pleased to see that DAERA Minister took time to visit Ballymoney and Lurgan shows last weekend. Shows are essential for promoting our livestock industry and agri-food businesses, and they also help to facilitate future economic growth. One-day events such as Lurgan Show also provide farmers and members of the rural community with an opportunity to have a day off and socialise with friends and family.
“I am reiterating my call for DAERA and other Government departments to conduct an independent review of local agricultural shows, which will ascertain the necessity for a financial life-line to safeguard shows and make them more sustainable in the future.”
