Carla Lockhart MP Welcomes Extension of Northern Ireland Childcare Subsidy Scheme

Carla Lockhart MP • January 14, 2025

Paul Givan MLA, DUP Minister for Education, has announced the extension of the Northern Ireland Childcare Subsidy Scheme (NICSS) into the next financial year. This scheme provides vital financial support to working parents by making childcare more affordable and accessible.

In Upper Bann, the scheme has already had a significant impact. As of November 2024:

- Children registered and approved by providers: 918

- Submitted claims: 890

- Total value of subsidy claims: £185,822

There are also 76 childcare providers in the constituency participating in the scheme, including:

- Daycare providers: 15

- Childminders: 45

- Playgroups (including PSEP wrap-around care): 16

Carla Lockhart MP commented on the announcement, saying:

“This is fantastic news for families in Upper Bann who have been availing of the Northern Ireland Childcare Subsidy Scheme. For many working parents, affordable childcare is essential, and this scheme has already provided significant support to hundreds of families across the constituency.

The figures from November show how vital this programme is: 918 children approved and claims totalling £185,822. This is a lifeline for families juggling work and childcare.

I want to thank Paul Givan MLA and the Department of Education for prioritising this important initiative. It is a key example of how the DUP is delivering for families and ensuring that childcare remains accessible, affordable, and high-quality.

I would encourage any parent or provider with questions about the scheme to get in touch. Supporting families and building a brighter future for children in Upper Bann remains a priority for me and for our party.”
