£100 Winter Fuel Payment to Support Pensioners in Northern Ireland

Carla Lockhart MP • November 20, 2024

Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has welcomed a significant announcement from DUP Communities Minister Gordon Lyons MLA, who has secured £17 million to deliver £100 payments to pensioner households impacted by the Labour Government’s removal of the universal Winter Fuel Payment.

The Labour Government’s decision to scrap this essential support was a direct attack on pensioners, leaving many struggling amid rising energy costs. This new scheme, a direct response to Labour’s actions, will ensure that 250,000 pensioners in Northern Ireland receive financial assistance. The payments will be issued automatically to eligible pensioner households, with no application process required, and funds will be delivered by the end of March at the latest.

Speaking on the announcement, Carla Lockhart said:

“The removal of the universal Winter Fuel Payment by Labour was a shameful attack on pensioners, many of whom rely on such support during the colder months. This decision heaped unnecessary pressure on vulnerable households already battling rising energy costs.

“Thanks to DUP Communities Minister Gordon Lyons MLA, we have secured £17 million to deliver this £100 payment as a measure of relief. While it does not completely restore the original Winter Fuel Payment, it is a significant step forward and a clear demonstration of the DUP standing up for pensioners in Northern Ireland.”

The payment scheme is a testament to the DUP’s commitment to protecting communities and addressing the impact of poor decisions made by Labour at Westminster. Carla Lockhart concluded:

“Our pensioners deserve to be treated with dignity and given the support they need to heat their homes and live with comfort. This announcement by Minister Lyons is a practical and meaningful step to address the hardship caused by Labour’s disastrous policy, and I am proud of the DUP’s leadership in delivering for our communities.”
