Upper Bann MP marks 300 Years of Parish Life
Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has paid tribute to Shankill Parish, following a weekend of celebration and reflection marking 300 years of parish life.

The anniversary was a momentous milestone for the local church, which has been a cornerstone of the Lurgan community for three centuries. Its spire has long dominated the town’s skyline, serving as both a landmark and a beacon of hope for generations of local people. A key part of its history was the 1859 Revival, during which the parish experienced significant growth and renewal.
Speaking after attending the anniversary services, Carla Lockhart MP said:
“It was a real privilege to join with Shankill Parish as they celebrated 300 years of parish life. This is a truly remarkable milestone and a testimony to the faith, commitment, and service of countless generations who have worshipped here and built this church into the thriving congregation it is today.”
“I was especially struck by how the parish flourished during the 1859 Revival. That period brought remarkable growth and renewal, and it reminds us of the need to continue praying for revival in our own day.”
“Shankill Parish is very much part of the fabric of Lurgan. Its presence on the town’s skyline has for centuries been a visible symbol of Christian witness, a constant reminder of God’s grace, and a beacon of hope to the local community. Congratulations to the entire congregation on this very special anniversary. Their commitment to sustaining and growing the life of the church is an inspiration.”
To ensure this historic milestone was formally recognised, Carla Lockhart MP tabled an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons. The motion congratulates Shankill Parish on its 300th anniversary, acknowledges its central role in the spiritual and community life of Lurgan, and commends the congregation for maintaining a strong witness to the Christian faith over three centuries.
Carla Lockhart MP added:
“By tabling this EDM, I wanted to ensure that Shankill Parish’s legacy and contribution are placed on the parliamentary record. It is right and fitting that Westminster recognises the significance of this anniversary and the important role the church continues to play at the heart of our community.”
