Update on Banbridge Cemetery Repairs

Carla Lockhart MP • April 30, 2025

Upper Bann MP, Carla Lockhart, has welcomed progress by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council in addressing damage at Banbridge Cemetery, following recent concerns raised by local families.

Concerns were raised after Storm Eowyn caused significant damage at the cemetery, resulting in fallen headstones and barriers being erected around affected graves. Understandably, this has caused distress for many grieving families visiting their loved ones’ graves.

The Council has now confirmed the following steps are being taken to remedy the situation:

• A procurement process to appoint specialist monumental sculptors has been completed.

• A purchase order for the necessary repair works has been issued.

• While grave maintenance is typically the responsibility of the titleholder, the Council has recognised the exceptional nature of this situation and is directly overseeing and funding the repairs.

• A contractor has been appointed and a detailed work schedule is currently being finalised.

The Council has stated that repairs are expected to commence shortly, with completion anticipated in the coming weeks. Titleholders will also be contacted directly to be kept informed of the repair timeline.

Speaking on the issue, Carla Lockhart MP said:

“This has been an incredibly upsetting time for many families with loved ones buried in Banbridge Cemetery. I want to thank those who have contacted me with their concerns. It is right that Council has listened and taken decisive action to address the damage caused by Storm Eowyn.”

“The commitment to undertake repairs, despite this normally falling to individual titleholders, is a compassionate and commendable response. I hope this brings reassurance to those affected, and I will continue to monitor progress closely.”

“I thank Council officers for their ongoing efforts, and for the transparency now being provided to local families. I know the families will appreciate seeing the barriers removed and dignity restored to the cemetery as soon as possible.”
