Lockhart Marks Purple Day and Encourages Greater Awareness of Epilepsy
Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has marked Purple Day, the international awareness day for epilepsy, by encouraging people across the community to learn more about the condition and how to respond in an emergency.

Mrs Lockhart recently attended a drop-in event in Parliament hosted by the Epilepsy Society, where she learned about the importance of seizure first aid and the simple steps that can make a difference.
Commenting, Carla Lockhart MP said:
“Purple Day is an important opportunity to raise awareness of epilepsy and to highlight the impact it has on individuals, families and communities.
“In the UK, around 1 in 100 people live with epilepsy. That means it is something that touches the lives of many people right across our community.
“I recently attended an event in Parliament where I learned just how straightforward seizure first aid can be. The key message is simple. Stay calm, cushion the person, and call for help if needed. These basic steps can make a real difference.”
Mrs Lockhart also spoke of a local family known to her who have been deeply affected by epilepsy.
“Today, I am especially thinking of a local family who are not only constituents but close friends. They continue to live with the consequences of epilepsy following the devastating loss of their son, Steven Carson.
“Their strength and resilience serve as a powerful reminder of why greater awareness, understanding and action are so important.”
Mrs Lockhart is encouraging the public to take time to learn more about epilepsy and how to respond in the event of a seizure.
“If I can take the time to learn more about epilepsy, then anyone can. I would encourage people to take a moment to familiarise themselves with seizure first aid and to help spread awareness this Purple Day.”
