Carla Lockhart MP Presses Government on Rocketing Fuel Costs

Carla Lockhart MP • May 14, 2024

Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has highlighted the significant issue of escalating fuel prices in Parliament, focusing on the severe impact these costs have on drivers, particularly in rural areas like Upper Bann. During Treasury question time, the DUP MP urged the Government to tackle the burdensome fuel costs, which have seen a sharp increase of 10p per litre since the beginning of the year, escalating the average cost of filling a family car to £82.50.

Lockhart stressed the unique challenges faced by rural residents who depend on private vehicles due to the scarcity of suitable public transport options. The rising fuel costs not only impact daily commuting but also the broader cost of living, making it increasingly challenging for many to meet essential travel needs.

"The issue of rising fuel prices affects everyone in Upper Bann," commented Carla Lockhart MP. "Without adequate public transport, many here cannot make necessary journeys. This is especially true for those in rural areas, who would otherwise be isolated. Families needing larger vehicles are particularly hard-hit, now having to make tough financial choices to afford over £80 for a tank of fuel for essential travel like getting to work or school."

"It's critical that the Government intervenes not just to address the surge in fuel prices but to ensure our families and rural communities are not left behind. As the DUP continues to push for economic measures that support our constituents, I urge the Treasury to act swiftly and decisively."
