Carla Lockhart MP pledged her support to the appeal and is encouraging people across Northern Ireland to donate and wear one of Marie Curie’s iconic daffodil pins to help fund vital services for those facing a terminal illness.
Every five minutes, someone dies without the care and support they need. By donating and wearing a daffodil this March, people in Northern Ireland can help Marie Curie Nurses provide expert end-of-life care and ensure that no one goes through their final days alone or in pain. The money raised also funds Marie Curie’s free support line and webchat, offering practical and emotional support to anyone affected by dying, death, and bereavement.
Carla Lockhart MP, speaking about the campaign, said:
"There is only one chance to give someone the best possible end of life, which is why the Great Daffodil Appeal is so important. Marie Curie plays a vital role in ensuring people get the care and support they need, and I am proud to support their efforts."
"With Northern Ireland projected to see the highest rise in demand for palliative care in the UK—an increase of 32% by 2048—it is crucial that we act now. I urge people across Upper Bann and beyond to get involved in the appeal. Every donation helps Marie Curie continue its essential work, providing dignity, comfort, and care at the end of life."
Carla Lockhart has also written to the Northern Ireland Health Minister, Mike Nesbitt, urging the Executive to prioritise palliative and end-of-life care in its three-year Strategic Plan for Health and Social Care. She is calling for:
- A long-term, sustainable regional funding model for the independent hospice sector.
- A new palliative and end-of-life care strategy for Northern Ireland, including a fully funded action plan with workforce planning and clear accountability.
- A dedicated palliative care policy lead - within the Department of Health to ensure these issues are prioritised in decision-making.
Toby North, Head of Public Affairs at Marie Curie, said:
"Right now, there is a crisis in end-of-life care. Far too many people experience avoidable pain, financial hardship, and a lack of support. Without urgent action, the situation will only worsen. That’s why we are grateful for Carla Lockhart’s support and her commitment to improving palliative care services in Northern Ireland."
Larry Lamb, who has been a long-time supporter of Marie Curie, added:
"Marie Curie cared for my brother, and I will always be grateful for the support they provided. The work they do is so important in making sure people get the care they deserve at the end of their lives. That’s why I’m encouraging everyone to get behind the Great Daffodil Appeal this year."
