Carla Lockhart MP Hosts Education Minister’s Visit to Gilford Primary and Dickson Primary School
Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has praised the outstanding work of Dickson Primary School and Gilford Primary School following a visit by Education Minister Paul Givan MLA. The Minister met with staff and pupils during a day focused on celebrating the schools’ achievements and highlighting key educational challenges.

Carla Lockhart said:
"It was an absolute pleasure to host the Minister’s visit to both schools. From the moment we arrived, the children were at the heart of each visit, and their warm welcome was a true testament to the incredible school communities and the dedicated teaching and pastoral support they receive."
During the visit, important discussions took place around school investment, special educational needs provision, resources, and additional support—all key priorities in securing the best outcomes for pupils.
At Gilford Primary School, the Minister had the opportunity to see “The Nest,” a newly introduced SPIMS class that seamlessly integrates children with additional needs into mainstream school life. Carla Lockhart commended the school’s strong pastoral, caring, and Christian ethos, acknowledging the commitment of the principal, teaching, and non-teaching staff.
Reflecting on Dickson Primary School, Carla Lockhart said:
"Dickson PS is a wonderful school that embraces our Christian ethos, culture, and heritage. A particular highlight today was the wonderful choir performance and a fun (and slightly challenging!) maths session. A huge well done to Vice Principal Glenda Thompson and her hardworking team."
The visit provided a valuable opportunity to showcase the strengths of both schools, raise pressing educational issues, and, most importantly, hear directly from pupils about their experiences.
"I am incredibly proud of both schools and their commitment to delivering high-quality education. It was an honour to welcome the Minister once again to Upper Bann and to be joined by my colleagues Diane Dodds MLA, Councillors Ian Wilson, Peter Haire, and Paul Greenfield."
