A sad day for the United Kingdom with abortion to birth for any reason now permitted

Carla Lockhart MP • June 17, 2025

Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has said that the vote on decriminalisation of abortion in England and Wales is a sad day for the United Kingdom.

The DUP MP said, “Whilst undoubtedly this vote will presented as a “progressive” step the reality is far from that. There is a continued focus on abortion law as a punishment but rarely is there any regard for the law as a protection, both for women and the unborn.

The reality of changes in legislation that permit abortion until birth is not just ignored, but when that reality is presented it is either dismissed or shouted down. That however is the reality of what has been agreed. Despite the loudest voices, the truth is that a majority of people right across the United Kingdom don’t support the reality of such proposals.

Parliament’s decision is a sad day for the United Kingdom and for anyone who wants to protect life. It will not deter those of us who value life and who will continue to argue for real and compassionate change.”
