Winter Fuel Payments – A Welcome U-Turn, But More to Do
Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has welcomed the UK Government’s decision to reverse cuts to Winter Fuel Payments for pensioners, a move that will see thousands of older people across Northern Ireland receive vital financial support this winter. However, she has warned that this reversal, while significant, does not go far enough in addressing the wider issues around energy support for older people.

The revised scheme will see pensioners with incomes up to £35,000 receive a Winter Fuel Payment of £200 if they are under 80, and £300 if they are aged 80 or over.
Speaking following the announcement, Mrs Lockhart said:
“This U-turn is significant and welcome. When the cuts to Winter Fuel Payments were first introduced, I was vocal in my opposition, both publicly and in Parliament. I am glad that the Labour Government has recognised the hardship these cuts created and has now decided to row back on them.
However, while this change will provide much-needed support to many, it is clear that there is still a long way to go. Too many older people in Northern Ireland were left behind last winter, facing spiralling heating costs and financial uncertainty through no fault of their own.
Our Communities Minister at Stormont, Gordon Lyons MLA, did act within the powers available to him, introducing a one-off £100 support payment to help mitigate the loss. While this was a welcome intervention, it did not fully replace the support that had been removed at a national level.
Our pensioners deserve better, every single one of them. No one who has worked hard their entire life, paid into the system, and contributed to society should be left worrying about whether they can afford to heat their home in winter. That is a basic expectation in a civilised society, and government must meet it.
I will continue to press for fair and consistent support for older people in Northern Ireland. It is vital that the restored Winter Fuel Payment scheme is fully mirrored by Stormont, and that no pensioner here is left worse off compared to those elsewhere in the UK.
The updated payments will be issued automatically later this year, there is no need to apply. However, I would strongly encourage anyone who missed out last winter, or who may now qualify for additional support, to check their entitlement. In particular, applying for Pension Credit could unlock further financial assistance, including automatic eligibility for winter payments and other cost-of-living benefits.
