MP Welcomes Positive Impact of School Speed Limit Review

Carla Lockhart MP • December 10, 2024

Carla Lockhart, MP for Upper Bann, has warmly welcomed the publication of a review into the part-time 20mph speed limit initiative at schools, which has confirmed the scheme’s success in improving road safety for children and their families.

The initiative, which introduced part-time 20mph speed limits at 216 schools, has been widely embraced by parents, schoolchildren, and the wider school community. The review highlights a general decrease in traffic speeds at school start and finish times, contributing to a safer environment around school grounds.

Commenting on the report, Carla Lockhart MP said:

"It is heartening to see how well this initiative has been received by parents, children, and schools. The findings confirm that part-time 20mph speed limits are making young people feel safer and reducing traffic speeds when it matters most. Ensuring the safety of children on their way to and from school is a priority we must all support.

I have been lobbying for schools across Upper Bann to be considered in a further tranche and am pleased to have received confirmation that the Minister based on the findings is now planning to expand the scheme to more areas and exploring the introduction of permanent 20mph limits near schools and in residential areas.

I welcome the department's commitment to further improving road safety. Measures like these not only safeguard our children but also encourage drivers to adopt safer behaviours. By working together as road users, we can achieve the goal of making our roads safer and preventing future tragedies.”
