Lockhart Tables Parliamentary Motion to Mark Banbridge RFC’s 100th Anniversary

Carla Lockhart MP • January 14, 2026

Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM) in Parliament to formally recognise and celebrate the 100th anniversary of Banbridge Rugby Football Club and its outstanding contribution to sport and community life.

The motion, tabled on 12 January 2026, congratulates Banbridge RFC on reaching its centenary year, marking 100 years since the club was founded in 1926 and first took to the field in a fixture against Newry. It recognises a century of rugby heritage in the Banbridge area and the club’s enduring role at the heart of the local community.

The EDM highlights the significant contribution Banbridge RFC has made to sporting, social and community life through its men’s, women’s, youth and inclusive teams, as well as the quality of players developed by the club over many decades, including former British and Irish Lion, Ulster and Ireland captain Rory Best.

The motion also welcomes the programme of centenary celebrations taking place throughout 2026, including commemorative matches and community events, and acknowledges the support provided through UK Government Levelling Up Fund investment, which has contributed to new and improved changing facilities at Rifle Park to better support players, including women and girls.

Speaking following the tabling of the motion, Carla Lockhart MP said:

“It was a privilege to table this Early Day Motion in Parliament to formally recognise Banbridge Rugby Football Club as it marks its 100th anniversary. Few clubs can boast such a proud history or such a deep connection to their local community.

“Since its founding in 1926, Banbridge RFC has played a vital role not just in rugby, but in bringing people together across generations. The club’s contribution to sporting excellence, community spirit and youth development is immense, and it is right that this is recognised at Westminster.

“Banbridge RFC has produced players of the very highest calibre, including Rory Best, but just as importantly it has provided opportunities for men, women, young people and inclusive teams to participate, develop and belong.

“I am delighted to see a full programme of centenary celebrations planned throughout 2026 and pleased that recent investment in facilities at Rifle Park will help ensure the club continues to thrive for many years to come.

“I want to pay tribute to the volunteers, players, supporters and families who have sustained Banbridge RFC over the past century. I wish the club every success as it enters its second hundred years.”
