Lockhart pledges support for Mind Your Head campaign

Carla Lockhart MP • February 12, 2026

Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart pledged her support for the Farm Safety Foundation’s Yellow Wellies Mind Your Head campaign, during this week’s parliamentary drop-in event at Westminster.

The MP welcomed the charity’s continued efforts as it marks the 9th anniversary of the campaign.

“The Farm Safety Foundation’s Mind Your Head campaign is a vital initiative dedicated to raising awareness of farm safety and mental wellbeing amongst the next generation of young farmers,” explained the DUP’s Westminster Agriculture spokesperson.

“Mental health issues can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, income or social status. Yellow Wellies has helped to break down the stigma surrounding mental health and wellbeing. Farming isn’t just a job - it’s a way of life - and the daily challenges can take their toll on even the toughest individuals.”

Highlighting the growing pressures facing the agriculture sector, the MP added: “Farming is an isolated occupation. Farmers are under sustained pressure from long hours, physical demands, weather conditions, crippling overheads, fluctuating farm-gate prices and animal diseases. The pending changes to inheritance tax have been described by many as the ‘final straw’.

“For years, poor mental health was a hidden issue within the agri-food industry. Thanks to the Mind Your Head campaign, and Rural Support in Northern Ireland, farmers are more aware of the mental health risks associated with farming, and the collective responsibility to look out for one another and seek help when they are struggling.”

Young Farmers’ Clubs across the UK are being encouraged to lead a nationwide suicide prevention drive aimed at tackling what has been described as farming’s “silent crisis”. Intervention can save lives.

Training is being rolled out across the UK to equip young farmers with the skills and confidence to recognise warning signs and start conversations. Yellow Wellies has also introduced a Suicide Awareness and Prevention eLearning module, specifically tailored for farming audiences.

Ms Lockhart continued: “Farming is tough. Long hours, financial pressures and government bureaucracy are piling on the strain. No one should struggle alone! If you or someone you know needs support, please reach out or log on to yellowwellies.org - help is available.”

Rural Support is also highlighting its Wee Book of Farm Support, a pocket-sized guide packed with vital information for the farming community across Northern Ireland.

The booklet outlines Rural Support’s free programmes and services, offering both practical farm business support, as well as confidential help for personal wellbeing and mental health. From financial pressures to emotional challenges, the guide directs farmers and farm families to the right support at the right time.

The MP added: “Knowing you are not alone and where to turn can make all the difference. Rural Support offers free, confidential and non-judgemental help and advice. Call or share the number – help is just a phone call away, tel: 0800 138 1678 (Mon to Fri 9am to 9pm).
