Kernan Cemetery Update

Carla Lockhart MP • May 20, 2025

Upper Bann MP, Carla Lockhart, has provided an update following concerns raised by local families regarding the condition of Kernan Cemetery.

In recent weeks, a number of constituents have contacted her to express their distress and frustration at the upkeep of the cemetery, particularly as they visit the graves of their loved ones.

Commenting, Carla Lockhart MP said:

“A number of families have been in touch with me recently about the condition of Kernan Cemetery, and I completely understand how upsetting and frustrating it has been for those visiting loved ones’ graves. These are deeply personal and emotional visits, and it’s only right that the grounds are kept to a high standard.”

“I want to thank the Cemeteries Manager and his team for their continued hard work across Upper Bann. I have a good working relationship with him, and I know he has been working hard to address the current concerns. I’m pleased to share that some progress is now being made.”

“A new member of staff is starting this week, which will help ease the current pressure and allow for improved upkeep.”

Further updates provided by the Cemeteries Manager include:

  • Grass clippings are mulched in place and not collected; however, areas that become overgrown will be addressed when possible.
  • Mowing is typically carried out within 2–3 days, depending on staff availability and weather conditions.
  • Recent delays in spraying were due to a high number of funerals, but efforts are underway to reschedule this work.

She added:

“I will continue to keep a close eye on this issue and press the Council for greater resources to be prioritised for the maintenance of our cemeteries. They are places of reflection and remembrance and should be treated with the utmost care.”

“If you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me.”
