Funding Boost for Upper Bann Marching Bands

Carla Lockhart MP • October 22, 2025

Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has welcomed news that three local bands have been awarded a total of £26,514 under the Department for Communities’ Funding for Marching Bands Scheme.

Speaking after the announcement, Carla Lockhart MP said:

“I am delighted that three of our local bands, St Mark’s Silver Band, Star of David Accordion Band, and Blackskull Orange & Blue Flute Band, have been successful in securing funding totalling £26,514 for musical instruments.

Upper Bann is rich with musical talent and a proud marching band tradition. This investment will help these bands continue to grow, perform, and contribute to our thriving province wide band scene, with the purchase of new musical instruments and equipment.

I have always been a passionate supporter of our local marching bands and remain committed to helping them thrive. Too often, these bands are unfairly vilified by those who seek to demonise our culture, yet they are made up of dedicated individuals who give countless hours to music, community, and tradition. Far from fading away, our marching bands are growing in strength and popularity, nurturing young talent, building community pride, and showcasing the very best of who we are. They are an integral part of our cultural fabric, and they are here to stay.”

Carla Lockhart also paid tribute to the Department for Communities and the Minister for his support of local culture:

“I want to thank Communities Minister Gordon Lyons for delivering this much-needed support. Marching bands are a vital part of our cultural life, bringing people together, developing musical ability, and fostering community pride. This funding is a welcome recognition of the positive contribution they make.”
