Carla Lockhart MP Pays Tribute to the Royal British Legion in Westminster Debate

Carla Lockhart MP • April 2, 2025

Carla Lockhart, MP for Upper Bann, has praised the invaluable work of the Royal British Legion (RBL) branches across Northern Ireland, highlighting their steadfast support for veterans and their families. Speaking in Westminster Hall during a debate on the contribution of the RBL across the UK, Ms Lockhart commended the dedication of local branches in her constituency and urged the organisation’s leadership in Great Britain to strengthen, rather than scale back, its engagement with Northern Ireland.

Speaking in Parliament, Carla Lockhart MP said:

"It was an honour to stand in Parliament and recognise the outstanding support provided by the Royal British Legion branches in my constituency—Lurgan and Brownlow, Portadown, Donaghcloney, and Banbridge. These branches play a vital role in supporting those who served, particularly those who defended our communities during the IRA terror campaign. Their work ensures that the sacrifices of our veterans and their families are never forgotten.

"The men and women who served in our armed forces stood as a human shield between good and evil, protecting the freedoms we enjoy today. It is essential that we continue to support them, just as they supported us. That is why I urged the Royal British Legion leadership to strengthen its relationship with Northern Ireland. The contribution of our veterans must be fully recognised, and any withdrawal of support from our local branches would be deeply concerning.

"Our veterans and their families deserve the utmost respect, gratitude, and practical assistance. Their service and sacrifice must never be forgotten."
