Carla Lockhart MP Challenges Government Over Costly COP30 Travel and Unachievable Net Zero Policies
Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has criticised the Government’s approach to net zero, highlighting what she describes as hypocrisy and eye-watering costs linked to ministerial travel to international climate conferences.

This week in Parliament, Mrs Lockhart raised concerns directly with the Energy Secretary after the estimated cost of flights was revealed to COP30 and that they generated an estimated six tonnes of CO2.
Speaking on the issue, Carla Lockhart MP said:
“I challenged the Energy Secretary about expensive flights to COP30, which are reported to have cost in the region of £22,000 and emitted an estimated six tonnes of CO2.
The Government’s unachievable net zero targets are having minimal impact on a global scale and do untold damage to our agriculture and manufacturing industries. Meanwhile, politicians are jetting across the globe to have conversations about how we can shift the climate dial ever so slightly. This seems to be a case of ‘do as I say, but not as I do’!
The Labour Government sent 210 delegates to this year’s climate conference in Brazil, generating over 2.5 million air miles. They joined 56,000 delegates who had flown in from around the world, while the countries which are reported to pollute our atmosphere the most – India and China etc – did not even turn up.
Unsurprisingly, the conference was a lavish affair, with again reported top hotel rooms costing £1,250 per night after local hotels quadrupled their rates to take advantage of the event.
We all believe in being good custodians of our environment, but net zero policies are unrealistic and astronomically expensive to the taxpayer. I will continue to stand up for our industries and say no to unachievable and costly net zero targets. It is costing the tax payer astronomical amounts for little benefit.”
