Carla Lockhart MP Calls for More Regulation of the Wild West of Social Media

Carla Lockhart MP • April 2, 2025

Carla Lockhart, MP for Upper Bann, has spoken out about the relentless online abuse she faces, calling for urgent action to tackle the toxic culture of social media, particularly the targeting of women in public life.

Carla Lockhart MP said:

"Online abuse has become a daily reality for many in public life, especially women. This isn’t just about political disagreement—it is often deeply personal, attacking appearance, families, and even the right to have a voice. That is completely unacceptable, and it says far more about those sending the abuse than those receiving it.

"But calling it out isn’t enough. We need action. The government must do more to regulate the ‘Wild West’ of social media, where faceless accounts can harass and intimidate without consequence. Platforms must be held accountable for the abuse they allow to fester, and stronger protections must be put in place to ensure people feel safe to engage online without fear.

"Political parties also have a responsibility to challenge this culture. Worryingly, a significant number of the accounts that target me are followed by senior Sinn Féin politicians. While no one can control every follower, the scale of this connection suggests it is no coincidence. This issue must be addressed within political circles.

"This is not about silencing debate—far from it. But it is about ensuring that public life remains a space where people, regardless of background or gender, can participate without enduring relentless abuse. We must demand better. We must hold those responsible to account.

"I will continue to speak up and stand strong, not just for myself, but for everyone who faces this kind of intimidation. No one should be bullied into silence."
