Calls for Fully Funded, Full-Time Veterans Commissioner Role in Northern Ireland
Upper Bann MP, Carla Lockhart has urged the Government to look towards many the Veterans Commissioner role in Northern Ireland fully funded and full-time, highlighting the unique and pressing needs of its veterans’ community.

Speaking in Parliament, Ms Lockhart emphasised Northern Ireland’s significant contribution to the armed forces, noting the region has the highest proportion of veterans per head of population in the United Kingdom.
Speaking on the issue Ms Lockhart said:
“Northern Ireland has a proud and unparalleled history of military service. Thousands of men and women from the Ulster Defence Regiment, the Royal Irish Regiment, and other British Army regiments served with distinction during Operation Banner. Their bravery and commitment ensured the safety of many during a deeply challenging time.
Many of these veterans still carry the physical and emotional scars of their service. Their sacrifice is one we must honour not just with words, but with action and proper support.”
Welcoming the recent appointment of Mr David Johnstone as Veterans Commissioner for Northern Ireland, Ms Lockhart praised his experience and dedication, while stressing the need for the role to be expanded.
“David Johnstone is a man of tremendous capability who served with great distinction. I have no doubt he will carry out his duties with diligence and passion. But for this role to achieve its full potential, it must be properly resourced. It must be full-time, with the Government providing the funding and backing necessary to meet the growing needs of our veterans.”
Ms Lockhart concluded by reaffirming her commitment to advocating for veterans’ issues at Westminster.
“Our veterans gave so much for their country, often at great personal cost. We will continue to make the case for them, and we will not stop until our veterans are given the recognition and care that reflects their service.”
